Are you burnt out… or just busy?

July 18, 2026July 29, 2026 Intentional Living

Can I ask you something?

When was the last time you truly rested?

Not the kind of rest where you’re sitting on the couch scrolling your phone while your mind is racing. Not the kind where you’re on vacation but still answering emails. I mean the kind of rest where your heart feels light, your mind is quiet, and you aren’t carrying the weight of tomorrow before today is even over.

If you’re struggling to remember, I want you to know something…

You’re not alone.

We’ve built a culture that applauds exhaustion. Somewhere along the way, being busy became a symbol of importance. We compare calendars, celebrate long workdays, and convince ourselves that if we’re tired, we must be doing something right.

“I’ve just got a lot going on.”

“I’m fine.”

“I’ll rest after this week.”

Sound familiar?

The problem is… next week turns into next month. Next month turns into next year. Before you know it, you can’t remember the last time you laughed without thinking about your to-do list. Here’s the truth most people don’t want to admit. Being busy isn’t the problem. Living like you can never stop is.

Busy seasons come and go. We all have deadlines, responsibilities, children to raise, businesses to build, and people depending on us. Burnout is different. Burnout doesn’t announce itself. It quietly moves in. You stop enjoying the work you once prayed for. You wake up already exhausted. The little things that never bothered you suddenly feel overwhelming. You’re physically present with your family, but mentally you’re somewhere else. You lose your patience more quickly. Your creativity disappears. You feel guilty when you rest because there’s always something else waiting to be done. Eventually, you stop asking yourself what you need because you’ve become so focused on meeting everyone else’s needs.

I’ve been there.

I’ve told myself that if I could just work a little harder, push a little longer, or accomplish one more thing, then I’d finally be able to breathe. But the finish line kept moving. Success didn’t bring peace because I was chasing productivity instead of purpose.

And maybe that’s where you are today. Maybe you’re checking every box, showing up for everyone else, and keeping all the plates spinning…while quietly falling apart inside.

Friend, hear me when I say this:

You were never created to carry the weight of the world. Jesus never measured worth by productivity. He never told the weary to push harder. He said, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Notice He didn’t say, “Come to me after you’ve figured it all out.” He didn’t say, “Come back when your schedule clears up.” He simply said, “Come.”

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do isn’t working harder. It’s taking a walk. Closing the laptop. Sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee. Opening your Bible instead of your planner. Watching your kids without thinking about your inbox. Taking a deep breath and remembering that God is still in control—even when you aren’t.

Rest isn’t laziness. Rest is trust. It’s saying, “God, I believe You can accomplish more with my obedience than I ever could with my exhaustion.”

So let me ask you one more time…

Are you just busy? Or have you been running on empty for so long that you’ve forgotten what it feels like to live with peace? Maybe today isn’t about getting more done. Maybe today is about laying down what was never yours to carry in the first place. Because your value has never been found in how much you produce. It’s found in the One who created you.

And maybe… just maybe…

This is the season where God isn’t asking you to do more.

He’s inviting you to simply be with Him.
